Reveille for the Ambrose-Hesseltine Chair

Between two trips out of town, two academic conferences, and the Thanksgiving holiday, the blog got neglected in November. But it was not for lack of prodding. While at the Southern Historical Association meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, I heard rumors that the search for the Ambrose-Hesseltime Chair was at last underway.

My first direct confirmation came from National Review reporter and Michigan alumnus John J. Miller, whose article “Sounding Taps: Why Military History is being Retired,” alleged that tenured radicals at Wisconsin were blocking the search. He manfully fought off the shame and ignoniminy of the Wolverines’ defeat in the OSU-Michigan game to ask if I had seen the H-Net announcement looking for applicants to apply for this position:

A virtually identical ad appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Inevitably — and probably quite justifiably — Miller takes some credit for this new development.
