The following list is designed to acquaint entering graduate students with some of the most significant literature in the field. The works represented were chosen for a variety of reasons: coverage, level of scholarship, point of view, etc. A few are simply classics with which any military historian should be at least somewhat familiar. Nearly every book was drawn from more comprehensive existing lists in both European and American military history. There students will find the full titles of these works as well as a great deal of related literature. This shorter list is intended only as an introductory survey; once students have become acquainted with these works they should move on to further study (guided by their advisor) in the longer reading lists.
